RCD & Safety Switch Testing

A Residual Current Device (RCD) — your safety switch — is designed to cut power in a fraction of a second if it detects a fault, preventing electric shock and reducing fire risk. Over time RCDs can fail or slow down, so periodic testing is essential.

  • Push-button operation testing
  • Trip-time and trip-current testing with calibrated instruments
  • Residential safety switch testing
  • Commercial and workplace RCD testing
  • Testing for rental and managed properties
  • Remote site and station RCD testing
  • Identifying missing or non-compliant RCD protection
  • Supply and installation of new safety switches
  • Written record of test results
  • Recommendations on testing frequency

Why It Matters

A safety switch that doesn't trip — or trips too slowly — offers a false sense of security. The only way to know yours works is to test it properly with the right equipment.

For workplaces, regular RCD testing is part of meeting electrical safety obligations. For homes and rentals, it's simple peace of mind that your family or tenants are protected.

Sebelec is licensed in the NT and SA, and tests to the relevant Australian Standards, providing a written record of results.

The detail

How RCD Testing Works

There are two parts to testing a safety switch. The push-button test simply checks the mechanism trips when the test button is pressed — something you can do yourself, but it doesn't tell you how fast it trips. The instrument test is the important one: using calibrated test equipment, we measure the actual trip time and trip current to confirm the RCD responds within the limits set by the Australian Standards.

Who needs RCD testing?

Homeowners benefit from periodic testing for peace of mind, particularly in older homes or after electrical work. Businesses and workplaces have a duty to maintain a safe environment, and routine RCD testing forms part of that. Property managers and landlords often arrange testing between tenancies. And on remote sites and stations, where conditions are harsh and a fault is a long way from help, working safety switches matter even more.

How often should RCDs be tested?

Push-button testing is generally recommended every few months, while full instrument testing is carried out less frequently — the right interval depends on the type of premises and how it's used. We'll advise on a sensible schedule for your situation and can keep a record of when testing is due.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about RCD and safety switch testing.

A circuit breaker protects wiring and equipment from overload and short circuits. An RCD (safety switch) protects people — it detects current leaking to earth, such as through a person, and cuts power almost instantly. They do different jobs, and many properties need both.
Pressing the test button is worth doing regularly and confirms the switch mechanically trips. However, it doesn't measure how quickly it trips. Proper instrument testing checks the trip time against the required standard — which is what actually determines whether it will protect someone in a fault.
Requirements depend on the type of circuit and when the installation or work was done, but modern wiring rules require RCD protection on a wide range of circuits. If your switchboard has little or no RCD protection, we can advise on bringing it up to a safer standard.
Yes — we test and service safety switches at homes, businesses and remote sites across Central Australia. For remote locations we'll often combine the visit with other electrical work to make the trip worthwhile.
If a safety switch doesn't trip correctly or trips too slowly, it needs replacing. We can supply and install a compliant replacement on the spot in most cases, so you're not left unprotected.
